Are the Oscars Relevant?

Yes, I'm glad that Heath Ledger won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his knock-out performance as the Joker. But there's a basic problem with the Academy Awards that this New York Times article points out:

"Still, all the showmanship seemed only to highlight the basic challenge of a ceremony whose producers were hoping to capitalize on movies’ strong commercial appeal: The best picture candidates — The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader and Slumdog Millionaire — altogether had fewer than half the viewers of The Dark Knight, an audience favorite that was praised by many critics but still did not make the cut."

Why would the Oscars snub a critically acclaimed film like The Dark Knight? Just because the powers that be can't stomach comic book stories? Heck, we're lucky the Oscars finally acknowledged The Lord of the Rings, a trilogy of--gasp!--fantasy movies, based on Tolkien's classic books.

I'm not railing against the movies that were nominated. I'm just saying that the folks who pick the nominees for Best Picture might want to broaden their minds...

Give Heath the Oscar!

Heath Ledger received an Adademy Award nomination today for best supporting actor for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight. The nomination is a bittersweet triumph, coming as it does on the anniversary of his death.

I hope and pray he wins. Somehow, he managed to embody chaos itself in his performance...I was scared to hell, sympathetic, morally outraged and laughing all at the same time. Christian Bale may have made me a die-hard Batman fan, but Heath Ledger caused me to look at comic books and super-hero movies in a whole new way.

This scene (with Gary Oldman and Christian Bale) is one of his best. I wish I could show it here, but you have to go to YouTube directly. But it's worth it!

Picture of the Day

Huzzah! The Dark Knight opens this Thursday, 18 July, at midnight. It's getting rave reviews--the New York Daily News gave it five stars (see the article here.) From what I've gathered, it's relentlessly dark, but positively brilliant. We'll see...

Picture of the Day

I suspect the late Heath Ledger will make for an excellent, chilling Joker in The Dark Knight. I can't wait to see this movie! (Though it won't be the same in the wake of Ledger's death...and the tragedy is bound to overshadow the film somewhat.)
