As much as I like Christian Bale in serious, chiseled roles (and it sounds like Melvin Purvis from Public Enemies is one of those), I love him as Theodore Lawrence (aka Teddie or Laurie) in Little Women . He has his serious moments as Laurie, but it's a more light-hearted part:

Public Enemies is coming out right near my birthday. That's Christian Bale's gift to me, right?

The film looks promising: Johnny Depp is playing gangster John Dillinger and CB is playing Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent trying to stop him. CB's not the star of this--per the press, he's clearly in a supporting role--but I don't mind. I'll take him in any good role, regardless of how much screen time he gets.

I headed over to Raven's community for Bale Fans today and found this interview with CB. It's not quite enough to hold me over until I see the movie, but it's helping.

I haven't even seen Christian in Terminator: Salvation yet. But I did check out this interview in GQ!

Not exactly a timely post, but...

I should mention that Christian Bale did apologize for the rant I talked about here. (About a week after it happened--I'm just waaaay behind!) He called up Kroq (an L.A. radio station) and made amends. He's funny and endearing--definitely worth a listen:


As a sidebar, he also makes a reference to 'our presidents'--meaning U.S. presidents. How cool--I wonder if he intends to live here permanently. I'd love to claim him as an American!

Christian's Rant

Oy. Yes, I've heard it. I can't quite bring myself to believe that this rant against photography director Shane Hurlbut was just a publicity stunt for Terminator: Salvation. No, I think Mr. Bale might have this sharp a temper; at least when he's under pressure. (No wonder he had such chemistry with Russell Crowe!)

Here's a balanced take on the rant (with a link to the rant itself, if you want your ears blistered) by Geoff Boucher over at Hero Complex. Hurlburt apparently made a mistake that no one with his experience should have made. And Christian Bale is an intense actor who takes himself and his work seriously. But even given all that, Bale went overboard here. And he sure didn't do his image any favors. And, yeah, I hope he offered a contrite apology, however badly the guy screwed up.

But I sympathize: I tend to rant and rave when I'm angry too. (Not quite with Christian's flair, however.) Edit: Moreover, as this article points out, this rant happened last summer, when he was in the midst of some family issues.

At any event, my opinion of Bale hasn't changed--I still think he's one of the best actors out there. And he's still my personal favorite. And I hope, for his sake, that this rant of his doesn't harm his career.

Oh no! I'm a lousy Balehead!

Unlike Raven, who put some gorgeous pics of Christian Bale up in honor of his birthday back on Friday, 30 January, I forgot to wish him a happy one. Sigh.

A belated happy 35th, Mr. Bale. Hope it was a good one!

Give Heath the Oscar!

Heath Ledger received an Adademy Award nomination today for best supporting actor for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight. The nomination is a bittersweet triumph, coming as it does on the anniversary of his death.

I hope and pray he wins. Somehow, he managed to embody chaos itself in his performance...I was scared to hell, sympathetic, morally outraged and laughing all at the same time. Christian Bale may have made me a die-hard Batman fan, but Heath Ledger caused me to look at comic books and super-hero movies in a whole new way.

This scene (with Gary Oldman and Christian Bale) is one of his best. I wish I could show it here, but you have to go to YouTube directly. But it's worth it!

No Charges Against Christian Bale

I mentioned Christian Bale's arrest here...so I'm glad that a number of today's news articles report that there won't be any charges against him. It's still not clear what sort of argument took place between Bale, his mother and his sister--but it is clear that it was a private family matter.

Congratulations to Christian for maintaining tight lips and a classy attitude throughout the ordeal! Now lets start talking about his upcoming role as John Connor in Terminator IV...
