David took off his shoes and then stretched himself out on Adam’s bed. Any moment now Adam would be appearing. Monday afternoons were the perfect time for romantic assignations—even Hop Sing was out of the house.
It wasn’t that Ben, Hoss, Joe and Hop Sing didn’t know what was going on. It was just nice to be assured of privacy.
David smiled as he put his hands behind his head. Of course, he would need to soothe Adam’s ruffled feathers a bit before they moved onto romance. Adam had been a bit sore over the Cunningham investment. And he hadn’t bought David’s tongue-in-cheek story about misplacing a decimal point.
Now for the important question: should he charm Adam out of his anger—or should he allow Adam to, ah, correct him?
Charming Adam out of his anger was always an enjoyable challenge. But on the other hand, David rather liked seeing Adam in his tyrannical, correcting mode. And, to own the truth, he didn’t mind being corrected.
Of course, there was a third option. He could defend himself and draw Adam into a hard-fought wrestling match that could end quite satisfactorily in bed.
He was still weighing his options when the door opened and Adam appeared on the threshold. David watched him fold his arms across his chest as he leaned against the doorframe.
"Make yourself at home," Adam said wryly, raising his eyebrows at David.
David grinned. "As you can see, I already have. Still sore about that misplaced decimal?"
"Not as sore as your hide is about to be," Adam informed him.
Ah, so Adam was likely to be quite strict this time. Well, no surprise there. He didn’t seem very familiar with the concept of leniency. But that was part of his appeal.
"Come here," David invited.
Adam gave him a long, measuring look and then crossed over to the bed. An instant later the two men were sitting up, locked in an embrace.
"You’re not really sore about that investment," David said softly as they broke apart.
Adam gave David’s ear a playful bite. "No," he admitted. "I’m sore that you didn’t trust me enough to tell me what you were up to."
David took a moment to leave a trail of kisses on Adam’s neck before responding. "You’re too conservative. But for your information, I didn’t make the investment yet."
Adam took David’s chin in his hand. "Then why did you allow me to think that you did?"
"I enjoy your tyrant act," David explained.
Adam rolled his eyes. "Then why did you just confess that you haven’t made the investment yet?"
David gave Adam a serious look as he placed his hands on his shoulders. "Because I don’t want you to think that I don’t trust you. This investment is extremely risky, Adam—I’m the first one to admit that. But there’s no point in investing a paltry three thousand dollars. To make this risk pay off, we need at least twenty thousand. And I’d prefer to invest thirty thousand."
Adam sighed. "My Pa will have a stroke."
"True," David admitted. "But your Pa gave you permission to invest Ponderosa money as you see fit. We can afford this risk, Adam."
"Yes, we can," he agreed. Then he gave David a level look. "You really want to take this gamble, don’t you?"
"Not as badly as I want you at the moment," David assured him, "but it’s a close second."
Adam grinned. "All right…make the investment. All thirty thousand of it."
David smiled back at him. "Thank you," he said as he began unbuttoning Adam’s shirt. "Now let me show you my gratitude…"
