Adam paced the hotel room, furrowing his brow in thought. He had made his decision and he didn’t regret it, but David was sure to complicate his life.
He raised the moral question in his mind only to dismiss it. Adam frankly didn’t find anything immoral about a relationship with David—otherwise he wouldn’t have considered it.
Pa might feel differently of course. They weren’t likely to see eye to eye on this issue. Adam usually enjoyed debating with his father, but this was one argument he would just as soon avoid.
He paused and took a seat on the bed. He would handle Pa by making sure the relationship never came to his attention. Despite the close knit ties of the Cartwrights, Adam felt that he was entitled to a degree of privacy.
More troublesome was the question of just what sort of relationship he and David would share. David might well have a long term view—could Adam share that?
He simply didn't know. On the one hand, he couldn’t deny the possibility. There was no question that David had a talent for pervading Adam’s thoughts and getting under his skin.
But a permanent relationship with David would prevent Adam from taking a wife. Adam wasn’t keen on the idea of entering into a marriage in name only. It might work for David and Abby, but he couldn’t imagine it for himself. And there was no possibility that Adam would commit to a real marriage with a woman and carry on with David on the side.
On the other hand, Adam thought wryly, he hadn’t made it to the altar yet. Perhaps marriage wasn’t in the cards for him.
He paused in his thoughts long enough to loosen his cravat, pull off his boots and settle down on top of the covers. Then he pushed his internal debate aside. He couldn’t answer these questions right now—much would depend on how things went from here. And, sooner or later, he and David would have to decide them together.
