Josephine Levine stared at her reflection. She was sitting at a vanity table in her suite in Virginia City, trying to determine whether she should dress modestly for her first visit to the Ponderosa, or whether she should simply be herself.

She decided on a compromise. The shocking day dresses she owned would have set off her bosom to the best advantage, but she avoided them in favor of a dashing new riding habit. Not quite the thing to wear for a morning call—but no one could call it immodest.

She wondered again what she would make of this fiancĂ©e of David’s. She remembered all too well what a disaster her son’s first marriage had been. On the other hand, at least this new girl was marrying him with her eyes wide open. That might make all the difference.

At any event, she was determined to get along with this Avigail. Josephine had to admit that she’d been rather brutal to David’s first wife—she wouldn’t make that mistake again.

No, this time she would play the part of the benign mother-in-law to perfection. It was not a role she looked forward to, but she was a consummate actress. She knew she would be able to pull it off.
