Liam started feeling guilty about the figurine later that afternoon. He was sitting on the bed next to Adam, puzzling out the words in a child’s book that Adam had purchased for him. Adam helped him with some words and let him figure out others.
Liam leaned up against Adam as they continued to work their way through the book. He wasn’t going to be happy about the figurine, Liam thought. But that was the point, wasn’t it? Mr. Harris deserved to have his figurine stolen and Adam—well, Adam should have been angrier with Mr. Harris.
He had a really good plan. Just before bed, he was going to place the figurine on the night table—right where Adam couldn’t miss it. Then Adam would get his message, loud and clear.
Liam carried out his plan that evening. While Adam was absorbed with paperwork at his desk, Liam reached over to his coat, which was hanging from the bedpost, and pulled out the figurine. He placed it right on the table.
Then he crept into his cot, closed his eyes and snuggled up with his pillow. He had a brief pang of conscience as he thought about Adam's reaction to the figurine. Would Adam still want him for a valet? Or would he fire him?
But Liam hadn’t forgotten the way that Adam just accepted Mr. Harris’s ‘apology.’ His face burned in anger as he thought about it. At length he rolled over and let out a frustrated sigh. Then he closed his eyes and drifted off into a half sleep.
